Re Sustainability gets Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) Certification for its Plastic Collection and Recycling Facility at Vizag

South India’s largest Plastic Recycling Facility at Visakhapatnam receives “Ocean Bound Plastic Collector & Recycler” Certification

Hyderabad, 26 May 2022: Ramky Reclaimation & Recycling Private Limited, a 100% subsidiary of Re Sustainiblity, Asia’s leading comprehensive environment management service provider, received the “Ocean Bound Plastic Collector & Recycler” Certification for its plastic collection and recycling facility at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The certification is significant at various levels: only 7 Indian companies have received this certification, out of which only two have been rated as a certified “Collector and Recycler”.

Re Sustainability is the only firm to also be certified as a Multilayered Plastic (MLP) Neutralizer. Multilayered plastic is a significant environmental challenge globally and is defined as any material used for packaging and having at least one layer of plastic as the main ingredients in combination with one or more layers of materials such as paper, paper board, polymeric materials, metalized layers, or aluminum foil, either in the form of a laminate or co-extruded structure.

The OBP Certification Programme is designed to encourage the removal of ocean-bound plastic from the environment by adding value in effectively collecting and treating it. The certification aims to encourage the capture of such plastic by giving it additional value and recognition in the market.

Re Sustainability’s Plastic Recycling Complex in Vizag is spread over three acres and hosts world-class infrastructure for recycling a range of industrial and post-consumer plastic wastes. It has the capacity to handle 1 MT of plastic waste per hour. A plastics collection network spread across several cities that feeds this facility also acts as a cataylyst for social inclusion of waste pickers enaged in the collection of plastics and helps them earn a respectable livelihood.

The plant is fully equipped to handle all types of flexible and rigid plastics, including LDPE, HDPE, and PP, from industrial and consumers. This facility can de-dust and shred plastic, apart from washing it in two stages, squeezing and granulating it. The facility also houses a blown-film bag making and bag printing machinery to produce high quality multi-purpose plastic bags such as grocery bags, biomedical bags and garbage bags, etc. above 75 microns thickness, that comply with state and central-level pollution control board norms. The bags are manufactured in accordance with the IS 14534:1998 standard guidelines for recycled plastic products.

The facility pre-processes and up-cycles industrial plastic waste as well as domestic post-consumer plastic waste into high-quality recycled plastic granules that can be used for manufacturing plastic products and packaging. Apart from addressing the important issue of plastic recycling, the plant also provides local employment.

Mr. Masood Mallick, Joint Managing Director of Re Sustainability, said: “This certification is a critical element of our response towards mitigating the ongoing pollution of our oceans. This opens doors to work with some of the most responsible global brands who use recycled ocean-bound plastisc in their products, such as HP, Adidas, Reebok and Dior. This will also enable make our major urban centres such as Vizag, a plastic free city.
