Re Sustainability Ltd. (ReSL) developed the Comprehensive Industry Document Series (COINDS) for the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to enhance environmental standards in the pharmaceutical industry, focusing on bulk drug manufacturing and controlling emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). The project included an inventory of bulk drug manufacturing industries across India, followed by preliminary field visits to 25 facilities to assess environmental impacts.
ReSL conducted in-depth studies at 15 Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) industries, including monitoring, sampling, and analysis of process vent emissions, ambient air quality, wastewater, and solid waste. A detailed material balance was developed to address solvent consumption and recovery processes to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.
The project integrated principles of green processing, green engineering, and green chemistry. ReSL identified cost-effective treatment technologies for water pollution control and recommended appropriate solutions for managing fugitive and source air pollutants. These efforts led to the development of environmental standards for the bulk drug manufacturing sector, aligning with regulatory requirements and promoting cleaner production practices.
On similar lines, CPCB has commissioned ReSL to develop guidelines for the textile industry, aiming to identify the best available technologies and define emission standards.
